open for beta commissions

bettsfic:

so, good news, i got accepted into the New York State Summer Writers Institute! i also got a 50% tuition stipend, which is great, but that means i need to front the other half of the money which is about $2000 with travel included. it’s a really amazing opportunity, but i can’t afford it on my own, so i thought i’d offer up the thing i’m best at and most qualified to give: feedback.

what i can do

  • provide in-depth feedback on any kind of work: fanfiction, original fiction, or nonfiction – there is literally no content i am unwilling to read
  • everything from copyediting to line edits to structural edits to overall feedback
  • plot brainstorming
  • resumes, cover letters, and admissions essays/writing samples
  • advice on how to tag/post to ao3 for max exposure
  • guidance on where to take your writing next
  • all-caps fangirling in the margins

what i cannot do

  • fact-check
  • ghostwrite
  • call out OOC or canon inconsistencies of fandoms i am not in (but i am in many fandoms and am willing to read any fandom)
  • read anything other than English

qualifications

  • i’ll be graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Pedagogy in may
  • i’ve held several editing positions, including editor-in-chief of my school’s litmag. i’ve also been a slush reader for four other publications
  • i’m a professional creative writing instructor; i’ve taught english composition, introduction to creative writing, and workshops
  • i’m a published author; my story “Lien” comes out in Quarter After Eight next month
  • i developed and led the @fanauthorworkshop, a successful fanfic workshop i held last fall. i plan to hold another one after i graduate
  • i’ve written a million words of fanfic which have received a total of over 850k hits and 67k kudos
  • i give writing advice to a lot of anons. in 2016, i put all my writing advice posts into a free collection called Drunk on Writing
  • i possess an unfortunate and extreme familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style

prices

  • $10 per 1,000 words for proofreading/copyediting – typos and grammar/usage errors only
  • $15 per 1,000 words for line/structural editing – this is the in-depth and very thorough feedback kinda stuff + squealing in the margins!
  • $10 for a crit letter – in addition to one of the editing choices above, i’ll write you a comprehensive letter (500-1000 words) pointing out your overall strengths and places for improvement. if original fiction, i’ll give you some ideas of where to submit for publication
  • $30 for a Skype/Discord consultation about your project or goals – i’ll read a short piece/excerpt of your work and we can talk about your ideas for the project, or we can chat about your writing overall (HIGHLY recommend this option for those of you with questions about writing, careers, or big projects – i do a lot of consultations with writers of all backgrounds and skill levels, and no one has ever left my office disappointed – i’d love to chat with you!)

if you’d like comparison pricing, here is the going rate for freelance editors
