I see some people saying that Ben and Martin seem surprised by how badly season four turned out to be. But how can they be? They read the scripts, they filmed it. Didn’t they know what they were making was going to be utter shit? Before it aired, Martin was telling everyone that it was their best season yet.

Well, to be fair to Martin and Ben they have both worked on this show for YEARS it is what both of them are pretty well known for. I’m not surprised they talked the show up before S4 aired. Of course they wanted people to like and enjoy it. And they’re not going to sit in interviews pre S4 and talk about how it was the worst season they ever worked on.

I don’t know timelines, but I do know they got all their scripts later than usual, sometimes while still working on current episodes. Now while I believe that’s laziness/bad writing/lack of caring about Sherlock anymore on Mofftiss part, what can Ben and Martin even DO at that point?

I feel like their silence on the show post S4 speaks louder than anything. They avoid the questions or just don’t talk about it at all. Doesn’t sound like they’re very proud of it to me.

I really feel like the only people to blame for this mess are Mofftiss and Sue Venture. I do really think Ben and Martin were playing as a love story and were just as shocked as we were about how things turned out. But they signed contracts and don’t want to bite the hands that feed them.

I’ve said it before, but I will be shocked if Martin agrees to do another season. At least any time soon.

Ok both are actors and Sherlock helped their career of course they are going to do more.

See I dunno if I agree with you on that one. Yes, it did help their careers. But when a character that you loved playing suddenly changes for no reason and they destroy that character for more of their lame plot twists, why SHOULD Martin go back to Sherlock?

I honestly hope he doesn’t. I don’t want to see Mofftiss butcher John Watson more than they already have, and Martin himself deserves better.

They can’t have been shocked about no love story after s3. Martin got his partner to play Mary. He and Benedict did their best to praise the character in interviews, shooting Sherlock included. If she was meant to be a big bad villain, it didn’t make any sense to keep that a secret since she shot Sherlock and that made her a big bad villain, except that the surprise was that she wasn’t one. TAB didn’t give any indication that Sherlock and John were meant to be; after all, they kicked the gay into the fall after labelling any hints at Johnlock as impertinent and offensive. Unless Martin and Benedict are exceptionally stupid, they must have known there’d be no Johnlock. And what stopped them from asking about it? They both signed for s4 for whatever reasons but it can’t possibly have been because they expected Johnlock.

Doesn’t Moffat have a reputation for finishing his scripts at the last moment? Would be tricky to get to read his for s5 before agreeing to do it. And why would he write a script before knowing the actors were willing to act? Wasted work. What the actors could do, could have done before too, is to say that they’d make another series if there’s Johnlock. But I doubt Benedict has any interest in being the first gay Sherlock now that he’s a star, and Martin would probably need an assurance that there won’t be any Johnlock to return.

It’s quite possible that they loved s4. It’s just that nobody’s asking them about it. And sometimes when people love something that gets criticised, they prefer to keep quiet about it. I think Louise Brealey tried to defend Molly for some inexplicable reason but it didn’t go very well.
