Sherlocked 2017 memories #18: Here’s some things I
remembered from the con, that I was there for, but didn’t tell you in my
reports: In Claire Pritchard’s meet n greet I asked her what was the idea behind John n
Mary’s new look in S4, which @gosherlocked had asked me to ask if I could. She said that Martin Freeman had come back from filming startup with this new hairdo, which
he said he was really happy with it & she agreed that it did suit him. He
had a consultation with her about S4 & he asked if he could keep it for John
in the new season rather than them cut it, she said that he had really thought
about it, it wasn’t just on a whim. She said that she wasn’t too sure about it,
and that possibly lots of viewers would think it wasn’t a ‘John’ look, but at
the end of the day they can’t push something onto an actor that they’re
uncomfortable with, so she talked to Sue about it & they agreed that it was
okay to go ahead with & that they could make it work storywise. She said
that she’d already discussed with mofftiss during tone meetings that John n
Mary should have slightly different looks (though initially only after the
birth, but it was changed to beforehand to because of logistics of filming),
because they were both moving on in their lives. And then they all agreed that for John
especially, he was no longer so dependent on Sherlock, wasn’t living in the
bachelor pad of 221b, He’d gotten married, was in this flat that had now had a serious
building work done to it which must have cost a lot them of money to do & had a baby
very nearly due. Plus he was leaving his army days long behind as well, she said how
in S1 he had a Very military cut, which they’d softened somewhat, but was still
mostly the same & he could now leave that behind too. So they worked out
that there was just about (tho she did make a ‘only just’ face at this point)
enough time between tarmac & the first s4 scene for his hair to have grown
out enough & they went for it. She said how important it was for actors to
feel comfortable in what they’re wearing & their hair n make-up to put them
at ease for filming.
However Martin did come up to her a week into filming &
ask her if she thought he’d made a mistake by asking to have ‘the swoop’ hair
as he was regretting his choice just a teeny bit. She said that actors do
second guess themselves a lot & this is quite like Martin, She assured him
that it suited the character & that John & Mary looked good with their
new styles together and that it was looking good on camera & she went over
everything they’d discussed beforehand & Martin went away feeling satisfied
with it. She said it did take more styling to do than the old cut though,
especially on outside filming!
With Mary they wanted something longer and less bright blonde
in colour, she & Amanda Abbington talked about how the wavy hair would be easier for a new mother
to keep up & her hair was still slightly longer from doing Cuffs. So that’s
why they went with that style. They should have moved on as a couple, so
changes for both suited them. Claire said that she really liked the hair in Mary’s
death scenes because it stood out so well against all the blue and darkness in
that scene.
John couldn’t afford a haircut because of the expense of having the front door moved across the room.
So, John and Mary’s flat was ‘redecorated’ for shits and giggles. Nothing on this show means anything. Okay, good to know.
Only lies have detail.
Loving the comments here. And as always, thanks so much @nixxie-pic for reporting to us!
Sherlocked 2017 memories #5: Here’s some things I
remembered from the con, that I was there for, but didn’t tell you in my
reports: Arwel Wyn Jones said that the black gunk that Benedict had to sink into in ‘The
Lying Detective’ had special stuff in it so it wouldn’t stain Benedict or the
clothes and that it could only be done in 1 take! he said that one of the
gunk’s main ingredients was what they use to thicken Mcdonalds milkshakes (!!)
and that if you put bare skin (like a hand) into it & then pull it out the
gunk falls off and your hand came out mostly clean… however he then looked at
Sue nervously & said that the suit was another mater & it was
completely ruined, so they had to choose a suit that they wouldn’t use again
for that scene. He said that Benedict was a marvel and kept his eyes open much
longer than Arwel would’ve been able to and that he held his breath for it all
without looking like he was doing it, which is quite tough in the circumstances
& Arwel was most impressed.
Hell, yeah. It’s really the only way, unless you have someone with you at all times who can run them with you. … I probably have cried on the toilet. I try not to, though, because I have people in my house who would be disturbed by their dad having such a strange, isolated mood swing.
“Do you walk around the house muttering your lines?”

Hair & Make up Pictures from Claire Pritchard’s meet n greet. At the end of her fabulous talk with us I asked if I could photograph the pictures in the folder she had brought along, sadly I only had a few seconds to take them and the room was very bright with spotlights & the folder’s pages were shiny, but I’ve done my best to photoshop them better, also during the chunk of the talk
with Sian
that I managed to get to, she showed 2 other pictures onstage.
