Dominated by LGBTQ+ and female-identified fans from various backgrounds, Tumblr blogs dedicated to queer readings of the BBC television series Sherlock (2010–ongoing) are a breeding ground for less-discussed forms of unremunerated queer labor: utopian, heuristic, and care work. In their digital fanworks, Tumblr queer users marry crafts associated with domestic heterosexual femininity (collage and scrapbooking) with established female fan practices (slashing and shipping) to articulate complex sexual and gender identities and navigate neuro-divergent mental health statuses. This article examines the shifts real-time digital interactivity and transmedia storytelling have introduced to viewer/producer power relations. Unpacking “queer cryptography” as a form of reception labor offers a feminist reading of the diverse modes of LGBTQ+ identification, kinship, and activism performed by queer female viewers on Tumblr, while questioning the vulnerability and possible exploitation of the unsanctioned affective labor produced by such a desperately underrepresented demographic.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

@tendergingergirl nominated me to try to find a way to keep track of the new meta that has been written since s4 of bbc sherlock aired in January, 2017. This is my first experiment. The folder and contents will be viewable by anyone with the link. My thought is to create a document for each writer, which will consist of their meta master list, ie a title and/or description, with a link back to the meta on their tumblr (or ao3 or wherever else their meta is made available to readers). If you tag me when you reblog your list, I’ll try to make sure it’s included, or updated.

I don’t have the time or skills to run a library of the actual texts, or a wiki that’s group edited. I also don’t have the intestinal fortitude to deal with mischief, if that happens I’ll have to shut it down or find some other method.

I’m a “both-and” meta reader, I enjoy the many different perspectives that various fans bring to the show. You may find writers in this folder whose views are different from yours, and I hope if that’s the case, you will exercise your good manners and use the back button rather than leaving rude comments.

I’d like to include LOTS more meta writers, one of the really exciting things for me about this hiatus, is how many new people are writing analysis! So if you have written even just a few pieces, please make a “master list” and reblog it and tag me! I’d like to include you!

HAPPY 2018 Y’ALL!!! So far this year, it’s been announced that we’re getting:

1) Japanese power couple Sara Shelly Futaba and Dr. Wato Tachibana in Miss Sherlock (premieres April 2018)

2) A feature film series produced by and starring Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes, the youngest Holmes sibling from the Nancy Springer novels

3) The anime miniseries Blossom Detective Holmes, from artist & director Steve Ahn of Voltron and Korra fame, featuring Skylar Holmes and her partner Jamie (support the kickstarter to make the entire miniseries HERE!)
