In tomorrow’s (horrid tabloid but anyway) paper! Man is an actual hero 🙂

“Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch fought off a gang of four muggers as they beat up a defenceless Deliveroo cyclist. The actor, 41, leapt from an Uber car and waded in after spotting the attack near Detective Sherlock Holmes’ fictional home in London’s Baker Street. The gang fled. Uber driver Manuel Dias said: The cyclist was lucky, Benedict’s a superhero.”

Ok, there’s more:

The star leapt to the rescue as the yobs punched the defenceless cyclist and smashed him over the head with a bottle.

Witnesses told how Benedict, 41, jumped from an Uber car in which he was riding with wife Sophie Hunter and sprinted into the fray, yelling: “Leave him alone.”

He dragged the four muggers off their bloodied victim. They then tried to punch Benedict, but he fended them off before they fled.

Driver Manuel Dias, 53, said: “I was taking Benedict and his wife to a club — but I didn’t know it was him at first.

“I went to turn down into Marylebone High Street and we saw four guys were pushing around a Deliveroo cyclist.

“My passenger jumped out, ran over and pulled the men away. They turned towards him and things looked like getting worse, so I joined in.

“He stood there instructing them in the street, shouting, ‘Leave him alone’.

“It was only then I recognised Benedict. Then it all got a bit surreal. Here was Sherlock Holmes fighting off four attackers just round the corner from Baker Street.

“I had hold of one lad and Benedict another. He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was very brave. He did most of it, to be honest.

“They tried to hit him but he defended himself and pushed them away. He wasn’t injured. Then I think they also recognised it was Benedict and ran away.

Sherlock star Cumberbatch insisted he was not a hero, claiming he ‘had to’ help the victim.

“Benedict was courageous, brave and selfless. If he hadn’t stepped in the cyclist could have been seriously injured.

“He asked the rider how he was and when he said, ‘I’m OK’ Benedict just hugged him.”

Sherlock claims top two of British TV’s best ever female characters in new poll

mrsabbington:

Find out which of the ladies of Baker Street is most popular.

BY JUSTIN HARP
13 FEBRUARY 2018

Never mind Holmes and Watson, it’s the ladies of Sherlock who shine in a poll of the most popular female characters in the history of British TV.

The survey was conducted by BBC Worldwide of fans throughout the UK, the rest of Europe, Asia and North America to find out which ladies resonate most with lovers of British television.

And, to little surprise, Amanda Abbington’s super spy Mary Morstan has come first in the poll, turning up in the top three of rankings in all of the territories that were polled by BBC Worldwide. Of course, she also received the most votes overall as well.

Whereas fans in Europe selected Mary for her “British sense of humour and Britishiness”, Chinese and Indian fans tended to admire her confidence and those in the US found her intelligence most appealing.

“Wow! This is brilliant,” Amanda Abbington said today (February 13). “Thank you for rating Mary Morstan your number one!

“That makes me very happy. I love Mary and I loved bringing her to life. She was a complicated, fun, dangerous, beautifully scrappy character to play and though she is no more, Long Live Mary Morstan!”

Even more impressive for Sherlock is that Una Stubbs’ Baker Street landlady Mrs Hudson finished second overall, ahead of Pride and Prejudice’s Elizabeth Bennett, Miss Marple and even Missy from Doctor Who.

Below is the full ranking of the most popular female characters in the history of British TV:

1. Mary Morstan – Sherlock

2. Mrs Hudson – Sherlock

3. Elizabeth Bennett – Pride and Prejudice

4. Miss Marple – Miss Marple

5. Missy – Doctor Who

6. Sybil Fawlty – Fawlty Towers

7. Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham – Downton Abbey

8. Hyacinth Bouquet – Keeping of Appearances

Sherlock had similar success in last year’s BBC Worldwide poll, when Benedict Cumberbatch’s Great Detective topped The Doctor and Luther to be named the world’s favourite British TV character.

The good news is that there’s a solid chance we’ll be seeing more of most of the Sherlockgang, since co-creator Steven Moffat recently promised that the series will return after a lengthy hiatus.

Actors/writers Ian Hallard and Mark Gatiss by Felix Clay

‘We met online – back when that was odd’ … Mark Gatiss and his husband, Ian Hallard, star in a play about a gay party that turns toxic. They spoke about new threats to equal rights, the Sherlock backlash – and their dog-sitting issues.

“He believes a Sherlock backlash was inevitable – a “familiar pattern” with anything so successful. “We toyed with calling one of the episodes Backlash, because it’s time.” He points out that the third series of The League of Gentlemen, “though now regarded as a classic, was very controversial. A lot of people hated it.”

There hadn’t been any intention to go off piste with Sherlock, he insists. “It goes for any artistic endeavour – all you can do is your best. Sometimes you have to have an unpleasant amount of attention. But I’m stopped in the street two or three times a day by people saying how much they’ve enjoyed it. What more could you want?””

I was avoiding it, but finally read Gatiss latest interview http://inevitably-johnlocked.tumblr.com/post/166652083590/shylockgnomes-the-sherlock-relevant-parts-of-an per @inevitably-johnlocked prodding so I knew what all the fuss is about.

God he’s such a dick & in such denial.

S4 wasn’t clever. It was bad. A super-secret sister wasn’t a huge plot twist, people guessed it ages ago.

And listen, I don’t give two fucks about how they’re “the lying liars that lie” and they’re supposedly hiding big plot secrets. If your show doesn’t make sense & is no fun to watch, then all the subtext in the world doesn’t mean shit.

If I’m gunna compare it to a show like Hannibal, clever, full of twists (some over the top) but still so well written & entertaining up until the end. And the whole cast & crew are such a delight to their fans. That’s how you do it.

To blame the fans for your half-assed writting & saying people just wanted to bring it down because it got big is such cry-baby bullshit. Someone get Mark his bottle & blankie.

I was rooting so hard for BBC Sherlock & Mofftiss’ heads got too big & they let a whole fandom down. It’s very telling that fandom & casuals alike hated S4.

So don’t tell me I’m not entitled to my salt. I gave this mess my heart & TPTB can kiss my salty ass for returning my loyalty & fandom with the steaming pile of S4. And YES they do owe us, the fans, decent TV. We’re the ones paying for their crap to keep it on the air.

I bow to your genius and eloquence, @yorkiepug!  “To blame the fans for your half-assed writting & saying people just wanted to bring it down because it got big is such cry-baby bullshit. Someone get Mark his bottle & blankie.”  This is so perfect!  I nominate you for fandom salt leader!

You’re really too kind. I’m just saying what I think/feel and whomever can either agree or disagree.

I’m not going to hide or pretend I’m not pissed. Seriously if folks wanna keep on believing and loving Mofftiss, that’s fine by me. But I’m mad as hell and I’m not quiet about it.

“I wrote it in two hours.” – Mark Gatiss

The best part is where he didn’t believe that the ratings for TFP were low. 😂 that’s some real deep “fake news” type bullshit justifying.

@yorkiepug I *try* not to personally post too much salt here (it’s hard) but fuck yeah did I agree with everything you wrote.
