okay so I’m seeing this Apple Tree Yard conspiracy going around I have access to BBC programming before it airs as I used to work as a critic I’m telling you – it’s a real show. Here they are posted on BBC Previews for critic to watch…
Louder for the people in the back

Yeah, tinfoil hat theory for another episode can’t possibly be real
The groundbreaking television everyone’s been talking about, the history-making watercooler moment that is absolutely possible – the reason not even Rachel Talalay was allowed to read The Final Problem even though the episode got “leaked” and promoted by the BBC – can all be accomplished on Friday. The BBC’s nightly news coverage of President Trump’s inauguration can be “hacked” by Moriarty, breaking the fourth wall like they’ve done in other ways before, and alerting viewers to the “leaked final episode” of series 4 online. Because of the time difference, this news would reach Americans in the morning, exactly as the inaugural proceedings are happening. Instead of giving Trump the attention he so desperately wants, Sherlock online would take viewers away from American news sites. Now imagine if this new “leaked” episode contained homosexual subtext becoming text. Even those people not crazy about outing Sherlock like that would still be impressed, knowing gay love took the spotlight off President Trump’s inauguration. This is exactly the way to “give the viewers what they want, just not in the way they would expect”. This is exactly what needs to happen to get people talking about Sherlock for decades to come. This is exactly what needs to happen to redeem Sherlock for any chance at award season or getting a series 5. This would make Sherlock the water-cooler moment the BBC so desperately wants.
If this is how they choose to do it, if this is how they choose to tie up all the loose ends they left out, if this is how they choose to make use of all the extra scenes they filmed over the years, if they faked their own death to prove they’re clever, then for me, it will be worth the wound.
Rachel said she did read the script. She clarified that she hadn’t seen the episode. It’s on her tumblr.
I don’t have a huge following on here but I just have to say that the lost episode theory is beyond unlikely.
1. We saw no additional setlock scenes (aside from some involving Mary giving birth) that were totally thrown away or could have made for an additional episode’s worth of material.
2. Sherlock is one of the BBC’s most popular shows. They would NOT just give up the opportunity to market a fourth episode and lose all that viewership. It’s just not a smart move.
3. Apple Tree Yard, while having a sparse IMDB page, does involve real actors and definitely seems to be a real show. Again, it would be a waste of money to lose the Sherlock audience by marketing something completely unrelated.
I’m really sorry, I’m so so sorry, but I would not get my hopes up for a secret episode. I disliked TFP as much as all of you, but I don’t think they’re redeeming themselves this way.
Okay, this is officially my first post on tumblr because I believe that the following is very important after watching the ‘final’ episode of Sherlock Season 4.
A few hours before the airing of TFP we get this article on radio times:
The important part is the last half of the article:
‘“Must be something comforting about the number three,” says Sherlock.
“People always give up after three…” before revealing that he has
hidden another device in the walking stick John brought into the room
earlier.Knowing that they might not be able to get the increasingly busy
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman back together to shoot more
Sherlock for the foreseeable future, did show creators Mark Gatiss and
Steven Moffat take the opportunity to film an extra episode while they
had the chance? If so, when would it air?’
Okay, nothing new there but then it comes:
‘The schedules for Sunday 22nd January show
that BBC1 has something called Apple Tree Yard on at 9pm. But then if
they wanted to keep the secret, the Sherlock team would hardly advertise
it in the listings would they? And anyway, perhaps they’re saving it as
a surprise for later in the year.So is this a possibility? Could there really be a fourth episode of Sherlock series four, a farewell gift to fans?Well, no… not according to Steven Moffat, who was unequivocal when the question was put to him.“It doesn’t reflect the fact that there’s gong to be a fourth episode
– for heaven’s sake, what kind of secrets do you think we’re keeping?!“Let’s go home and check. Oh look episode four… the lost special…"‘
Let’s look at that sentence again: ‘The schedules for Sunday 22nd January show
that BBC1 has something called Apple Tree Yard on at 9pm.’
So the supposedly last episode of Sherlock S4 just aired and there was no mention of an additional episode before less alone a possible date for it and now radio times publishes an article that links Sherlock to the yet to be aired BBC mini series Apple Tree Yard.
Note that is is the only source out there that makes a connection between Sherlock S4 and Apple Tree Yard.
So what do we get when we search for Apple Tree Yard on the BBC’s website?
Just one episode is listed for 22 January at exactly 9 pm. Even though the mini series is supposed to have 4 episodes in total.
Does the number 4 ring a bell, anyone?
And now have a look at the content description of Apple Yard Tree’s first episode:
I mean, come on, a doctor? An enigmatic stranger? More is at play (’It’s not a game anymore’)? This could be literally taken out of Sherlock.
And what are the names of the two leading actors in this book adaption? (That by the way is described on Amazon.com as ‘suspenseful, erotically charged, and masterfully paced (…) intelligent psychological thriller about desire and its consequences’)
The doctor is played by Emily Watson and the enigmatic stranger by Ben Chaplin.
It may seem far-fetched to assume that they would fake a trailer and pay actors to stay quiet about pretending to have played a mini series when nothing but the trailer actually happened in reality BUT.
But you never know with the producers of this show, do you?
My (very strong) guess is: Next Sunday we are going to see the ‘lost special’ that is going to make history.
I mean, let’s face it. Today’s episode was not ‘television history’.
But hiding a 4th additional episode in ‘plain sight’ by disguising it as an episode of a mini series with a plot description that very well plays into the ‘insane wish fullfilment’ we have been promised? That’s genius.
“I think you draw the eye with disguise,” Gatiss agreed. “It goes right
back to the first series – ‘the element of disguise is learning how to
hide in plain sight’ is what Sherlock says, and that’s exactly what it’s
all about
The dialogue included: “Can be wonderful, can be terrifying.” “What did you say?” “Something that drives you in and crushes you to nothing.” “We are going to have different versions of the same story.” “Do you want to hear the wildest story of them all?” “You’re starting to intrigue me.” “It’s all just one big performance.” “We are going to be busy, you and I”
But if it turns out that they made a female Watson in order to make Johnlock then I don’t know what I’d do.
I didn’t even see this trailer OMG! I
agree that even if there is another episode, the ‘real’lost
special,, and it is indeed all we ever dreamed of…this stunt is
going a bit too far just to troll the mainstream media.
@inevitably-johnlocked said that the
promo for Apple Tree Yard already happened a year ago so maybe, sadly
it’s not going to be aired next Sunday. (btw, I don’t think they
would pull off fem!John lmao because that would be just as insane as
this episode so please don’t worry about that 🙂
Anyhow, I’m not giving up hope yet
because this last episode?
That’s the epitome of a typically
heterosexual horror/action movie.
I mean, two main characters on a death
mission: Reminding themselves to be soldiers (perfected with a manly
nod and a bro handshake), people dropping like flies because of a
super villain no one knew before existed at all and who has the power
to command everything and everyone, even the power to make rooms
appear out of thin air and make them vanish again, Sherlock walking
like a proper gangster whilst holding a huge gun, bad explosions,
life or death decisions – could it be more fake?
This feels like a parody because it is.
I WANT TO BELIEVE. I did speculate they could be showing it on the 29th, yes, even though the schedule is showing something else on that slot. Sherlock is BBC’s biggest Drama. They could afford the surprise if they wanted to. Everything sounds fishy, their silence, the clues about a fourth epsode within the show, the fact that nothing makes sense… BUT THE THING IS that this waiting is plain cruel. Why not advertising the real ending? Why do it this way?
hi! re: your post about the possible 4th episode on that website… i was looking at time warner cable’s sherlock page and there is a guide for a possible 4th episode? it’s not a piracy site and can be found here
WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING? WHY THEY PLAY WITH US LIKE THIS? YOU BRUTES
I wouldn’t appreciate being toyed with like this, but I’m finding that I just don’t care enough right now.
“THERE MUST BE SOMETHING COMFORTING ABOUT THREE, PEOPLE TEND TO GIVE UP AFTER THREE” called it
If this is a real thing happening then it better fucking be good and make up for all this bullshit
Well, it’d be ‘goundbreaking’ and it’d make history at least
If THIS is what they’re talking about and it turns out to actually happen then they did just fucking make television history because I don’t believe no one else has done this, and as much as I am excited, I’m also still very pissed off.
Yep, still pissed too and even if the episode is awesome, it will never be enough to forgive what happened since yesterday and how bad some of us feel. I can really see why they’d do that but I’m not sure it’d be worth all the pain and the wrong they’ve done
It would also explain why this season took longer to do if they planned more than three episodes.
i am fully on the tinfoil hat train now and i want to apologize in advance for getting people’s hopes up but i just needed to add that a few weeks ago, my boyfriend (who works at the video streaming subscription site vudu) asked me why there were four episodes of sherlock this season because they got an order to plan for four slots
now, i personally think that the likelihood is great that this fourth slot simply indicates that all of the theater extras are being given their own episode slot
but also
i want to believe
Yahoo search for “BBC Sherlock” is also showing a 4th episode for next week….
