Right so this is where I’m at right now: I agree that the sheer amount and extremity of errors and inconsistencies make absolutely no sense as things stand, but at the same time, I’m doubtful that anything can be done about it at this stage. Like, on the one hand, those errors and inconsistencies along with all of these things give logic to the 4th episode theory:
Benjamin Caron, who directed TFP, tweeted this (which he later deleted, but if you google “nothing in #sherlock is a coincedence” you’ll see that it did exist) which both contradicts about a million things in TFP if it is real and final and ties in with the whole “people always give up after three”
But at the same time, there are these issues with this theory, which in my opinion shouldn’t be ignored:
So my position right now is that yes, there being a fourth episode does make sense on a logical level, but I can’t see how they could actually practically execute it, unless they were to just release it on the boxset, which seems like a massive risk to me because I’ve already cancelled my s4 preorder because I was so disappointed and so have lots of other people and why air an embarrassing disaster of an episode only to reach a much more limited number with an actual potentially groundbreaking resolution?
Also, I’m just not willing to get my hopes up again if they’re only going to be crushed for the second time in less than a fortnight. At this stage, it really is a possibility that TFP was just so bad that anything else would make more sense by comparison and that this is just one more example of us being cleverer than the writers. Of course I’ll be delighted if there IS a fourth episode, but am I certain at this point? Sadly not.
I agree with all of this. The theory has grounds, but also too many things it cannot address also does not excuse the gaslighting that has occured
i’m sorry but that isn’t returning anything for me at cultbox tv
X i feel like i’m supposed to share this but tbh i have no comment
correct me if i’m wrong, but this tweet is fucking gone now?? @moriarty have i finally lost it?
this tweet showed on my computer that it was posted at 4:05 am, then this morning at like 9 am i get a message to check it out from someone i’ve never heard of, and then as soon as bruna and i have both disseminated it amongst ourselves, it gets deleted like listen these are the facts and i’m not asking anyone to draw hard conclusions but THESE ARE THE FFACTS
probably someone somewhere has been talking about the exclusive mary content at the cinema but if so it hasn’t found its way to my dash so
here we go
my first thought was “why would they kick off this episode with a bunch of mary stuff when she is basically completely irrelevant except for the random voiceover at the end” but we’ll just file that away for later
pretty much right out of the gate they throw us a shot of mary with the deduction text floating all around her including “liar”
then amanda starts talking about how mary entered the show as a new partner for john after he loses sherlock
she goes on to say that john didn’t want to lose mary like he lost sherlock
by this point i’m already 👀
then we get the clip from the best man speech where sherlock is saying he loves john lololol
then the whole time amanda is talking about sherlock and john and mary like working together and stuff she’s standing in 221B with the horns perfectly framed behind her head
like not just one brief shot
she’s just standing there talking with horns on her head
she starts talking about her past and of course we get the clip where she shoots sherlock
then amanda talks some about TAB and for some reason she’s just talking about mary while there is a shot of emilia riccoletti on screen from the scene where she kills her husband 👀
then when amanda talks about mary’s death she says that mary got to go from shooting the hero to being a hero lol but when she’s talking about mary taking the bullet for sherlock, she describes it as mary doing something stupid ??
and then amanda says “it SEEMS” that mary is done and the way she said it was so suspicious akdkdkfkff
and then amanda says mary is one of the best characters she’s ever played which is interesting to me because aside from the bit where she shot sherlock she’s actually been pretty boring 👀
so anyway then i watched the episode and of course there is the voiceover at the end from mary’s posthumous dvd and not for the first time i wondered “what is the point of them having had mary do this voiceover, why her, she’s been dead for two eps and was irrelevant in this one so why did they need to bring her up again”
and then it clicked
that making the cinema exclusive content mary-centric and reminding everyone of mary right at the end of the episode would make sense… if there was going to be another episode and mary was going to be important to it and you wanted to make sure she’s fresh in everyone’s minds
Wow thank you for giving us this summary, Gabe!
I love this! It fits with what I was just writing about the whole horror story of TFP being John’s nightmarish hallucination while he’s dying. It’s the tragic ending, the hetero version, the “bros forever” ending, so it’s fitting that it’s narrated by a villain. By the same person who caused the estrangement between John and Sherlock. And as the cherry on top she says “who you really are doesn’t matter”, which is the complete opposite of the message of the show. John said it himself, who he wants to be IS THE WHOLE POINT.
So I feel like the subtext of that cinema excusive is shouting ‘remember she is a villain, look at those horns, you’re watching a liar narrating this episode, this is how the show would have ended if
evil queerphobia were to win! And THAT is the final PROBLEM we need to defeat, but not the final episode!’
Yep. This is true. Star Trek today jumps from mid-season 4 at 11AM to mid-season 6 at 12PM for no apparent reason, making this Sherlock Holmes episode come on during today’s inaugural proceedings. What a strange coincidence….. of course, if it is a coincidence.
anyone else noticing how in the vid of the lights turning off at piccadilly circus the screens turn off like they’re CRTs?? like, correct me if i’m wrong but would giant LED screens just turn off without like ..sdkfhlkfa d i’m sorry, but it looks like a computer animation of what a CRT TV does when you switch it off
LED screens definitely don’t do this.
For example, this gif below is from the “Earth Hour” in 2010. They just turn black.
I’m not saying anything, but… do you remember where did we see a similar effect? What a funny coincidence.
