PSA: If you ship ____ you are NOT

the-holmes-hive:

JOHNLOCK/TJLC – a mofftiss-hating freak who fetishises gay couples
SHERLOLLY- a heteronormative homophobic straight woman who is ignoring the Obvious Love
SHERIARTY/ADLOCK – a supporter of abusive relationships

I’m so done with these angry anons or salty screenshotting accounts. Seriously, if you have the time to send cruel, abusive anons to ANYONE, you also have the time to get off Tumblr and take a break to think about what you’re doing. If you have the time to sift through another ship’s tag, screenshot something that gives them happiness in some form, and repost it on your account with a salty comment to gain attention, ditto. Instead of letting you happiness rest on mockery of someone else, enjoy YOUR ship. The only excuse you have to mock people is if a hater angry-anons your page. I get it, ā€˜they started it first with their @________ account’ but leave them. If they want to do their harmful shit, ignore them or block them. Don’t sink to their level. I’m not pointing fingers at anyone, but honestly I have left so many of these ships because of the poisonous shit they’re saying about other ships. Thanks.

Put this on a list of things new fandom peeps must know

i’m stuck out on mobile and the answer to this requires some sitting-down time and a full keyboard.

anyone else want to chime in on this in the meantime?

1. Because they may not feel comfortable sharing their personal interests with the public

2. Because they may have people in their real lives that would make them feel uncomfortable about their fandom activities

3. They even might live somewhere where it would be heavily frowned upon or worse.

4. Their professional career might be at risk because employers can be huge dicks, and not everybody has the luxury to choose a cool boss

5. Because others may (wrongly but still) view it as unprofessional and childish.Ā

From the top of my head. I’m sure there are more valid reasons than those 5.Ā

I work for a university. If people at work knew about my fan works, I would lose an enormous amount of credibility. It’s important to keep those things separate.

I live in a pretty mych homophobic environment. And people don’t have the clear concept of fandom here. So if anyone now finds out about my blog, what i do, even my rl friends (sigh) i will be mocked and made fun of. And i am open about my sexuality in the fandom which i am not irl..that’s enough of a reason.

Same here…I use a username that is different from what I use for everything else and I don’t link any other social media to my tumblr/ao3 accounts. I am from a conservative religious background and my family would not understand why I would support a gay ship. I have actually mentioned reading Sherlock fanfic to them, but they think it’s casefic and such; they have no idea that there’s porn in it. šŸ˜‰

If it was known, it would make it very difficult for me to get funding for a job I’m hoping to start next year. I’ll be teaching in an extremely religiously conservative place, and while one of the reasons I’m being brought in is to be a voice of moderation, it won’t help if I can’t get there.

Besides all that, writing and putting it out there is a bit scary. It’s so much easier when my readers are people I’ve met only in this sphere. I finally gave the link to my ao3 works to one of my best friends irl this week and I’m really nervous even though she’s one of the least judgmental people I know. Not really about the gay ships, but just the quality of my writing as I’ve just started writing again after ten years.

I work in healthcare and if anyone knew I had this blog they would definitely raise and eyebrow. I had to change that I was a part of an LGBTQ+ org on campus to something less obvious so I would even get a call back for an interview after I graduated. If the convention happens in Minnesota next year I’m not sure if I’ll be able to go because of where I work and so many questions will be asked.

Only one of my irl friends knows about this blog. Just one. And she’s in the fandom too. My roommate and one other friend kinda knows that I’m more into the show than someone who watches it when it airs and that’s it. My other friends would be confused, some would not be supportive at all, some wouldn’t care if they knew. Since starting this blog I only catalogue posts at night, late at night when no one can watch over my shoulder because I don’t know how they will react.

My personal tumblr is linked on my blog as well as my name, but I don’t have it linked to my Facebook or anything else. I suppose if someone hated me they could find out where I live and by proxy who I actually am cause my name is rare. It’s not something that I think about often but it could happen.

OMG OMG OMG

Ok so someone has probably already posted about this and I just missed it…so forgive me.

BUT.

I JUST GOT THIS IS THE MAIL.

Which is great right? Ā Right. Ā Lovely book, high quality. Ā 10/10 recommend.

BUT.

I flip to the first page and LOOK…HOW FUN! Ā A GAME! Ā You have to find the clues hidden in the pics! Ā

The text saysĀ ā€œYou see, you just don’t observe…hidden within the illustrations are nine clues, essential to solving the crimes in each episode.ā€

Oh OK, let’s look at the clues for the fun little game…

Standard stuff…Carl’s trainers, the pills, the hound’s pawprint, the deerstalker, John’s gun, Mary’s wedding ring, the knitted cap…

Wait…

MARY’S WEDDING RING???

IS A CLUE TO THE CRIME COMMITTED IN THE SIGN OF THREE???

HOW DARE??? Ā

BUT GUESS WHERE IT’S HIDDEN???

Here’s a clue…

ANY GUESSES???

THE FUCKING POOL!!!

THE. FUCKING. POOL.

I CAN’T MAKE THIS UP!!!

IF MARY ISN’T MORAN I WILL EAT THIS COLORING BOOK.

did anyone ever update this post with the conclusion and the book eating

i will say this – it’s respectful to not publicly link someone’s RL professional presence to their pseudonymous fandom creator name unless they explicitly show/tell you it’s okay to do so.

saying ā€œperson X was a member of the Sherlock fandom and we’re proud of them!ā€ is one thing… but saying ā€œperson X was a Sherlock fanartist and here’s their specific handle so you can google their history of work including explicit/sexualized fanartā€ is a whole other thing.
