It’s the opposite of being patronised, they’re being told that they’re clever enough to understand very complicated things and I think the audience loves that. Even if they don’t understand, they’re being expected to.

Toby Jones, about Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat’s writing and what they expect from the audience

Ok, now keep telling me how WE READ TOO MUCH INTO THINGS

Remember what Toby Jones said about us

“When a fictional character starts keeping secrets from the writer, that’s when that character becomes real.” – Steven Moffat

Steven. You said once that when fictional characters start keeping secrets from their writer, that’s when they become real. But they told you, didn’t they, and you didn’t listen. You thought that John-”I don’t mind (anytime)”-Watson and Sherlock-”there’s something I’ve meant to say always”-Holmes live platonically together in Baker Street, raising a daughter, re-building their home? Look at them. This home is filled with love, laughters, and kisses. So take a deep look in the mirror and think carefully about why they did not share that secret with you.

I guess, in real life [I would rather be] married to an ex assassin [instead of best friends for ever with a high functioning sociopath] because I suppose at least that would imply some form of.. romance

“And equally, I find flirting with the homoeroticism in Sherlock much more interesting.” Mark Gatiss

So thanks for the confirmation that we really weren’t seeing things all along.

Mark Gatiss confirming he was queerbaiting all along

@dammitsully

SHITHEAD

Right, so just for context, that quote is from the October 2010 issue of Buzz magazine and here is the full quote in its entirety:

Despite this lack of public awareness, being part of the gay community is clearly important to Gatiss:

“The older I get the more I want to give something back. I mean, I keep meaning to do something.” When asked if he’d be interested in making a series about gay issues, his response was enlightening:

“No, I don’t think I’d make a kind of gay programme. It’s much more interesting when it’s not about a single issue. And equally, I find flirting with the homoeroticism in Sherlock much more interesting. Of course this reflects the grand picture of everyone’s strange make-up; there are good gay people and bad gay people. I wouldn’t like to make an issue film around the culture of being gay.”

The thing is, I get what he means, in a way. Because, yes, “flirting with the homoeroticism” in Sherlock is interesting and makes for fantastic telly. Personally, I’d still say his intentions were mostly good, he just monumentally bollixed the execution.

Cool motive. Still queerbaiting.

do you remember when martin freeman said “sherlock is the gayest story in the history of television” years ago? i think he’s a little bitter now

even Martin got queerbaited y’all

I saw that gif of him going around about TFP saying that them being friends is nice (with his mouth) while his face screamed something else.

He can be arrogant, to be sure, and sometimes I don’t know if he is taking the piss out of fandom (saying “it is what it is” about the johnlock fanart when the second half of that sentiment is “and what it is is shit” the first time John says it), but his face in that moment…

I think, for all the weirdness the leads have had about fandom and the drama Amanda kicked up about Johnlock on her Twitter, Martin would have really, dearly, truly loved to be the actor to go down in history as THE queer John Watson.  He knows his range, knows what he can do, and was ready and set to act the ever-loving hell out of a repressed Watson, finally coming out after all this time.  His acting choices for the last 7 years show him gearing up for this.  Hell, half the reason there ever WAS a Johnlock Conspiracy is because Martin made deliberate choices all along in the way he played John.

Martin knew it would be talked about to death, analyzed in college classes, and probably would have showered him with praise and awards.  It would be historical in the way none of his roles so far have been.

I do not have to stretch very far to assume Martin was disappointed it went in the other direction.

REBLOGGING THIS EVERY TIME I SEE IT TILL THE END OF TIME

Oh!  I found the gif I saw!  These are by @geek-royalty, can be found (and reblogged, hint hint) HERE

It does not take a tinfoil hat to see he’s not super jazzed about it.  Martin is an actor’s actor.  He has had many big, literary roles but this could have been HISTORIC and he knows it.

Martin Freeman shares our pain and complete disappointment.

What’s the worst thing you can do, to your very best friends? Tell them your darkest secret. Because if you tell them and they decide they’d rather not know, you can’t take it back, you can’t unsay it. Once you open your heart, you can’t close it again
