Hello! @sherlocksecretsanta is still on this year, and signups are currently open. Since we’re starting a bit late, we’re going to try to get signups and matches done over the next few days, leaving you with more time to work on giftworks and anonymous mini-gifting leading up to the trade/reveals

Signups are open until Dec. 5

You should receive your Secret Santa shortly afterwards and some info about what they might like to receive. This is an online-only exchange. It’s strongly encouraged to send your recipient snippets and messages (anonymously!) leading up to the exchange/reveal! You can do this any of the days leading up to the 25th. But they do not have to be Christmas themed at all. 

All ships are welcome (we will do our best to pair people with matching preferences!) as are all gift forms. It doesn’t have to be all fanfic or fanart – you can do playlists, graphics, gifsets, moodboards, imagine your otp lists, a detailed fic-rec list… the idea is to be thoughtful, and gift something the recipient would enjoy!

Chinese fandoms are currently experiencing an actual Purge right now. Every fandom. Accounts are getting banned, all shipping wars has been put on hold. Everyone’s hiding their porn and moving them to ao3. 

There’s reward money involved. A recent update to censorship law raised the maximum reward for reporting illicit online materials to 50k yuan (7000 USD), so some people are reporting porn like crazy right now, and apparently, BL fandoms have been especially targeted, where some even more tame things got maliciously misreported. 

Anyway, it’s a mess. Content creators are just disappearing off the face of the internet left and right. Expect an influx of Chinese porn fics on AO3. 

Well… if there’s one thing out of this mess… nothing bands warring ships/fandoms like censorship… 

Seems like the cash reward will be 

600,000 yuan ($86,000) from December 1st…!

Tweet pleading for people not to repost any fanart taken offline by Chinese creators

Hey guys, if some awesome person in China translated your fic into Chinese or created fan art, you really should spread the word! This could affect someone you know!

This is also a call out to all you fuckwits that repost art on Tumblr, twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram. Your negligence hurts people.

A chinese homoerotic novel writer is sentenced to 10 years to prison because of “illegal publication”*  and “spread of obscene materials”. After that, China government set up bounty for reporting “illegal publication”. Everyone on weibo, lofter etc. is deleting thier posts.

China is using this act as a way of controling the freedom of speech, it’s not just a matter of “no homo”. They just use the fandom content creators as an easy target and a way to scare people off from writing and publishing things the government doesn’t like.

China is living the Nineteen Eighty-Four novel. Please don’t post chinese fan works, especially not with their original chinese artists/writers right now. You could literally ruin their life.

* in China every book has to be approved by the government before
publication. Anything against the government or with “the wrong idea” will be banned. Their government didn’t pay too much attention to fan books before, but in recent years, they are tightening their grip on their people. Fandom and their activities as a whole has become a target because 1) fandom and their creative community make self-publishing a thing and China doesn’t like that the people know it’s easy to print stuffs (to spread unwanted information/ideas etc. 2) fandom and their creative community is the easiest and obvious target because of the general anti LBGT+ envirnment, general public will support the gornment for “cleansing the society from obscenity” withouth thingking about 1)

Hey Guys I’m really sorry for having to do this after all the help you gave my family when we were homeless but we’ve got a new situation.

Last week my sister-wife Cec got in a car accident, she’s okay but because she was driving for Lyft at the time the insurance companies are having a wrestling match about who has to help us and who can get out of it. You know insurance people and we don’t even have a rental this time to tide us over.

Second last night Arthur’s mother died in Kansas and we are in New York State so we are trying to think of a way to get there but we have nothing. Arthur is still unemployed the rest of us are on

disability and we don’t even have a car at the moment.

So I’m turning to the fandom again for help. Arthur Cec and I would really REALLY like to go to the funeral which means we need bus or plane tickets and enough money for a stay at a hotel and food money. If there is anyway anyone can help us please do. It’s been a hell of a year and it just keeps getting worse in a lot of ways and the only people that ever helped us were you guys.

Article 13 has been approved by EU. It’s worse than Net Neutrality has ever been. I don’t even know if we will have any access to Tumblr, Pinterest, Ao3 or even Instagram. Memes are probably dead, just like reactions, fanfictions and gifsets. Everyone in EU is in danger that they will not have access to their favorite sites. But I haven’t seen a SINGLE post about it on my dash because Americans doesn’t give a damn.

Don’t panic! This was expected at this stage and it is only the beginning. If you are a European and feel passionate about this, please keep on reading and help!

So what has happened so far … the Commission has drafted up a long overdue copyright reform. https://eur-lex.europa.eu/procedure/EN/2016_280 It contains a lot of good, and some bad: mainly Article 11 and 13.

This was put forward as a whole to the European Parlament, where it was voted down on the 5th of July 2018

This meant, this will not go through the fast way, and will be subject to scrutiny and change. 

The Commission made some alterations https://eur-lex.europa.eu/procedure/EN/2016_280 and put it forward again. If Parlament would have voted it down again, it probably would have meant back to the drawing board, but most people (including me) agree that Europe does need copyright reform, so on the second vote it passed the first step:

So what happens now? 

This will now go into what is called the Trilogue, where Commission, Parlament and representatives of all national governments will sit together to make alterations until everybody is happy implementing the regulation.

This means we can now influence this via our MEPs and our National Government!

In countries that are red your government is likely to support Article 13.

What to do now?

There are a lot of organisations that organise actions against article 13. Check out their websites and get in touch with your MEP or local government and let them know you are unhappy about this.

… and many many more, just google to find one in your country.

Also, as @asthesea-breezehitsmylungs pointed out, a lot of people are not aware of this going on. So make them aware! Share the memes and point them to the petitions. And don’t just complain how shit this is, get in touch with your politicians!

Yo, everyone, EU or not, please at least signal boost this shit. I’ve said it before and I will say it again: those two articles will suck majorly for all of us.

Like dude, how much time do you spend enjoying various things that relate to, Idk, your favourite show or book series. It’ll probs be gone. Funny memes and shit? Nah our generation doesn’t fucking need to laugh, it’s not like half of us are already depressed or anything. And so many other things that are cool about the internet, I’m not even gonna mention how some big, cool places like YouTube and Tumblr will be fucked by this.

So seriously, there’s only so much a small bunch of people can do. We need some noise on this. As much as I hate to admit it, some things require some fat numbres to be paid attention to. So even if you’re not planning on taking any action yourself, the best thing to do would be to spread this to everyone you trust to either get involved or pay it forward like you did.

And seriously, every little thing helps, ok? We should have a say in how the laws that deeply affect us are made.

You may have heard about the efforts in Europe to reform copyright law. The debate has been ongoing in the European Parliament for months. If approved next week, these new regulations would require us to automatically filter and block content that you upload without meaningful consideration of your right to free expression. 

We respect the copyrights and trademarks of others, and we take all reports seriously to ensure that your creative expression is protected. We make this clear in our Community Guidelines. There’s already a legal framework that works and is fair: Today we take down posts and media that contain allegedly infringing content when we receive a valid DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown request. We also provide clear-cut ways for people to fight back if they believe their removed content was not a true violation. These instances are monitored and reported and live in our biannual transparency report. 

The suggestion to use automated filters for issues of copyright is short-sighted at best and harmful at worst. Automated filters are unable to determine whether a use should be considered “fair use” under the law and are unable to determine whether a use is authorized by a license agreement. They are unable to distinguish legitimate parody, satire, or even your own personal pictures that could be matched with similar photographs that have been protected by someone else. We don’t believe that technology should replace human judgment.

Tumblr is and always has been a place for creative expression, and these new regulations would only make it harder for you to express yourself with the freedom and clarity you do so now.

So I still haven’t been able to find a job. I’ve had interviews but they didn’t pan out and I’m in the process of like three more and I’ve also maybe got a shot of being hired by the city, but if I am I wouldn’t start until September which is too late for most things.

I’m working with the EDD and charities to help sustain myself until I get employed again, but there are certain things they can’t help with. Terrifyingly hilarious is the fact that no one offers a service to help me pay my water bill.

I need to pay $81 dollars of my past due amount by Thursday or they’re shutting my water off. If possible I need to try and get an additional $86 more than that to pay the current month otherwise they’re just going to send me another shut off notice for September 16th.

But at the very least I need to stop them shutting off my water.

Announcing Femfirmative-Johnlock Fic Recs

I’m a multishipper, and I love all the characters in Sherlock, including the women.  Which means that I read a metric shit-ton of fanfic, of all ships.  And Johnlock is the only pairing that tears down, disparages, and ridicules any of the characters on the show – and all of those characters are women. 

When I’m reading a Johnlock fic for the first time and Molly or Mary are introduced, I hold my breath: is she gonna be a prop? A punchline?  Is Sherlock going to be disgusted by her sycophantic infatuation?  Is John going to despise her to his very core because she’s a murdering bitch?  At every mention of her throughout the story, I read with tension because I’m never confident about how she’s going to be treated.

That really sucks.

It sucks even more for readers who want to give Johnlock a try, but who also love the women, and don’t want to read that sort of bullshit in their entertainment.  Over the years I’ve seen several posts from people who honestly gave Johnlock a try, only to be repulsed by how viciously the women are portrayed.

Which really sucks, because there are so many amazing Johnlock fics, and series, and writers, who shouldn’t be losing out on readers because of this ugliness.  And readers who are missing out on some of the best writing in the fandom because they don’t want to come across it.

So this blog will try to address that.  I will be posting recommendations for Femfirmative-Johnlock* fanfics, for anyone who wants to read Johnlock without the misogyny or violence towards women.  These are Johnlock fics that are “safe” for those who love the
ladies in Sherlock.

What does it mean to be a Femfirmative-Johnlock Fic?

  • Johnlock is the primary pairing (duh)
  • Female characters are present in the narrative in an active way
  • Female characters have canon or reasonable personalities
    • (Mary is not Eeeville; Molly is not pathetic and weak)
  • Female characters serve the story, not work as a prop for the ship
  • Female characters are not punching bags or objects of derision

Fics will be complete, so no rug-pulls will surprise you.  Johnlock is the focus and the goal of these fics, not the women, so don’t expect a lady-heavy story.  Female characters might figure heavily in the story, or might have only a few scenes throughout.  But no matter how much or little they’re in the story, they’re treated as valid and as worthy as the
men.  

This won’t be a hate blog.  I won’t post links to ugly fics for shaming or any other reason, I won’t review hate-fics (those are easily identified.) I want to connect readers to fics they want to read, not fics to avoid.  I’m considering including warning posts, for WIPs that start off Femfirmative but change course in the writing, or for so-called trojan horse fics, but I’m not fully decided on that yet. 

I welcome recommendations from others as well: if you’ve read – or written! – a Femfirmative fic, please send me a link!  I’ll read it through and post it if it meets the criteria.  I’m happy to rec everything from multi-chapters to drabbles.  I love finding new fics and new authors, and the more I have to post, the more everyone gets to read.  Feel free to spread the word!

Figment, the recently closed writing website, has just launched (after a long delay) their long-awaited successor to figment known as Underlined, where users can post their work and receive feedback, supposedly.

DO NOT USE UNDERLINED. DO NOT POST YOUR WORK ON UNDERLINED.

Underlined’s terms and conditions contains a clause stating that the rights to all your work that you post on their website belongs to them!!!!

Underlined belongs to Penguin Random House. This is an extremely dirty trick for them to play on writers, especially young writers and children, who come to the internet to get feedback and will lose the rights to their work. Please boost!!!

For my writing friends looking for an online writing community, DO NOT USE Underlined.

During my last therapy session, I told my therapist I wanted to go to Sherlocked but I couldn’t afford it, so he suggested I put together a gofundme campaign. 1) Because he thinks it will help me meet new people like he wants and 2) He thinks the chance of going will help motivate me because I really want to go. 

So, I put together a Gofundme (HERE) for the amount of money it should take to get me and a friend to Sherlocked USA in May. 

The funds will go towards Gas, Food, Tickets, and the Hotel room for the 3 day weekend the convention is in Los Angeles.

I would mean so much to go, Sherlock means so much to me, I have met some wonderful people and made some great friends and it has gotten me through some hard times and I would be forever grateful if I could go and meet the actors that made the show what it is.

I would be forever grateful for the help and the chance to go and it would honestly mean so much.
