I don’t think that s4 is last because Moffat confirmed in January 2014 that Sherlock will return for a fifth series.
p.s. but i’m
astonished
because 4 series looks like really end of story
I think Mofftiss combined their plans for S4 and S5 into one series, probably because they thought they might not get a chance to make S5 – for obvious reasons – and they didn’t want to leave the story unfinished. I think that explains why E1 and E3 seem rushed and a bit disjointed. IMHO, of course.
E2 was probably intended as the finale of S4, with that big cliffhanger, the revelation of Eurus’s existence.
S5 would have been the resolution of that cliffie, done at a much more leisurely pace, and culminating in the reconciliation of the Holmes family and the rebuilding of 221B.
I saw that gif of him going around about TFP saying that them being friends is nice (with his mouth) while his face screamed something else.
He can be arrogant, to be sure, and sometimes I don’t know if he is taking the piss out of fandom (saying “it is what it is” about the johnlock fanart when the second half of that sentiment is “and what it is is shit” the first time John says it), but his face in that moment…
I think, for all the weirdness the leads have had about fandom and the drama Amanda kicked up about Johnlock on her Twitter, Martin would have really, dearly, truly loved to be the actor to go down in history as THE queer John Watson. He knows his range, knows what he can do, and was ready and set to act the ever-loving hell out of a repressed Watson, finally coming out after all this time. His acting choices for the last 7 years show him gearing up for this. Hell, half the reason there ever WAS a Johnlock Conspiracy is because Martin made deliberate choices all along in the way he played John.
Martin knew it would be talked about to death, analyzed in college classes, and probably would have showered him with praise and awards. It would be historical in the way none of his roles so far have been.
I do not have to stretch very far to assume Martin was disappointed it went in the other direction.
REBLOGGING THIS EVERY TIME I SEE IT TILL THE END OF TIME
Oh! I found the gif I saw! These are by @geek-royalty, can be found (and reblogged, hint hint) HERE.
It does not take a tinfoil hat to see he’s not super jazzed about it. Martin is an actor’s actor. He has had many big, literary roles but this could have been HISTORIC and he knows it.
Martin Freeman shares our pain and complete disappointment.
like i know we have had discussion of the use of “i want to break free” in TFP and like clearly the song choices are always extremely intentional and deliberate and serve a purpose
and if you listen to the entirety of the song, literally the entire thing applies to sherlock
if we operate from the assumption that there is an ep 4 and that TFP is actually the problem and not the resolution to the problem, then the use of this song is extremely telling
Island isylum, good because the people die if they escape.

the thing for me is that even if i’m wrong about the 4th episode, i feel like that’s going to be easier to process than if i hadn’t had anything to fall back on on sunday. the grief won’t be as potent, and i’ll be able to deal with it more rationally, though i’ll probably still be living in the pit of despair for a while afterwards. at this point, i’ve got nothing to lose, and the pros of having fun with the tinhatting (for the last time ever) are bigger than the cons
