For @thepineapplering who noticed that the dates of the “serial suicides” in the A Study in Pink final shooting script were not the same as the dates on the show… they have changed to about 7 months apart ish, meaning that John and Sherlock, according to the “final script” met in June rather than the canonical iconic 29th January.

*SPECULATION AHEAD*

So, I looked up the dates, and noticed a possible clue/pattern. And again, the answer might lie in JOHN’S BLOG.

1) Jeffrey Patterson. ON SCREEN, he dies on 12th October.

ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPT, THIS IS NOW 12TH MARCH.

(x)

2) Jimmy, who went back for his umbrella. ON SCREEN, he dies on 26th November.

ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPT, THIS IS NOW 26TH APRIL.

(x)

3) Beth Davenport. ON SCREEN, she dies on 27th January.

ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPT, THIS IS NOW ON 8TH JUNE.

But… damn it, there’s no corresponding date on John’s blog. A changed pattern?

BUT WAIT! If we follow the original dates….

2 days after the 27th January is the iconic 29th January, when John and Sherlock first meet.

And if we count 2 days after 8th June, we get 10th June. I wonder if anything happened on that date-

Oh. Interesting.

(x)

CLUES? A MESSAGE?!

Eeeek I’m so sorry I probably didn’t phrase this as best as I could have, I’ve had some questions so: basically I’m saying:

1) John and Sherlock were always going to meet on 29th January, because of the canon nod.

2) The third suicide has to have happened just before John and Sherlock meet, so the case is still relevant.

3) So why these odd dates on the “final shooting” script that was recently released? It doesn’t make sense for Beth to die in June and then John and Sherlock meet the following January.

= the dates have been changed on the script, and they coincidentally match John’s blog…?! *eye emoji*

@jesperfaehey said: “to add onto your numbers post about the asip script, the address is 29 in the elephant in the room post so it makes even more sense! :)”

🗓👀!!

@sarahthecoat said: they have to have changed the script to match the blog dates then, is my assumption… maybe to call attention to those entries.

Yeah! Okay so I’ll post my first impressions here and then folk can have jumping off points if there’s more to be found:

1) First blog post: THE WOMAN. A mention of censorship as part of the “Official State Secrets Act.” Tragically hilarious as John thinks Sherlock’s mourning Irene’s death and isn’t fine with it but “will get there.” Sherlock complains about the post and John says the case “gives people an idea about the real you.” Sherlock replies: “HOW DOES IT?” I can sense his frustration from here. Just like he’s begging John in TLD to Get the Hint Already ( “Oh for God’s sake, I don’t text her back!”), here he’s trying to get John to realise that his version of events of this case, doesn’t equal “the real Sherlock.”

2) Second blog post: A FEW PICTURES. Brings up “The Woman” again. John reminisces with some old pictures. Here’s the ones I thought were most interesting:

First picture= the graffiti from The Blind Banker. John says: “It looks like some graffiti but it was actually a secret code. It was all secret codes back in those daysand mentions Sherlock getting anonymous messages from (presumably Moriarty) via his Science of Deduction blog.

Possible double/triple meaning there with: ‘it was all secret codes back in those days’ perhaps? What do you mean, John? Something more than the coded ciphers? Did you feel like you or Sherlock were speaking a “secret code” to one another? Mixed signals, miscommunication?

Second picture= the smiley face Sherlock drew on the wall in TGG. Now popping up all over the place for s4 Promo… it was the image for the Did you miss me blog that came on here for a day… fishy…

Eighth picture= Sherlock’s Deerstalker.

We now know thanks to Mrs Hudson that anything Sherlock doesn’t understand, he stabs on the mantlepiece. John’s tone is fond and teasing: “But this is meant to be a positive thing. I’m not dwelling on the bad stuff. I’m remembering the good times.Such as how much he loved this hat…

He adored that hat so much.”

I think Sherlock didn’t understand the hat because he was viewing it in terms of his ‘public persona.’ He didn’t understand why John insisted he wore it-does John only want to see the ‘fake’ part of him? But to John, the hat is just a hat, he just thinks it’s funny, it’s just endearing to see Sherlock wear it. (like Irene Adler’s text possibly mimicked John’s thoughts: I like your funny hat. Let’s have dinner.”).

And the final picture is the game of cluedo John and Sherlock played:

Again, stabbed. Sherlock didn’t understand it, thought the rules were wrong. (Our reaction to TFP?) John’s last word is on Sherlock thinking the victim had killed himself: “I said at the time that it wasn’t very likely. In fact, I think I said it was impossible. And he told me that it might be improbable but nothing’s impossible. I wish I still believed that.” Taking aside that context, might that be a foreshadowing of parts of the audiences’ reactions to The Final Problem? There can’t be more, the game is over, there being more to tell isn’t very likely…. but nothing’s impossible…

3) Third blog post: THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. As

@jesperfaehey says, the 29 Ryder Lane address corresponds with the date 29th January. So, the “elephant in the room” was born when John and Sherlock first met each other.

Yeah, so, calling attention to “official secrets”, codes, and sherlock stabbing things he doesn’t understand. That sounds about right. And elephants.

To add to the date differences:

His Last Vow on screen:

SHERLOCK (over phone): Mary Morstan was stillborn in October 1972. Her gravestone is in Chiswick Cemetery where – five years ago – you acquired her name and date of birth and thereafter her identity. (x)

His Last Vow “final shooting script”:

image

1972 to 1974: a difference of 2 years. (Sherlock left John for 2 years?) (And Mycroft says in The Reichenbach Fall “we don’t want another repeat of 1972″?!)

John has 1 blog post from October:

image

(x) Interestingly, this is where he mentions “finding someone” (Mary).

Then @thepineapplering made my brain melt by pointing out this:

image
image

As @thepineapplering put it: are the wrong dates our key to the cipher… and is the cipher, instead of Eurus’s song, now John’s blog?!

@candencekismet that’s a good point, if anyone is lucky enough to have a copy of the physical script rather than the one via BBC writers room that came out a couple of days ago, it would be interesting to compare the dates! 👀

to look over when i have more time.

Sherlock s4 timeline

obotligtnyfiken:

shinysherlock:

After much re-watching, notetaking, and googling, here is the short version (yes, the short version!) of the best timeline I could put together for the fourth series of Sherlock. Thank you to everyone who helped by signal boosting and sharing helpful links with me!

The bad news? There are not many verifiable time anchors in series 4. A lot of this is based on playing “Guess How Old Rosie Is In This Scene.” There are also many montages and vague time gaps.

The good news? That leaves a lot of wiggle room for fic, art, meta, etc.

Holler if you see any glaring errors or if you want the long version omg.

  • 2009: A.G.R.A. attempts hostage rescue at embassy and it goes sideways.
  • DECEMBER 2010: Mycroft gives Moriarty to Euros as a Christmas present. Around this time, in ASIB, Irene Adler leaves her phone for Sherlock in 221b at the Christmas party.
  • JUNE 2011: Sherlock jumps off roof of Bart’s.
  • 2012: Culverton Smith has creepy meeting and tests out TD-12 on friends and his daughter, Faith.
  • NOVEMBER 2013: Sherlock returns. Events of TEH.
  • MAY 2014: John and Mary’s wedding.
  • CHRISTMAS 2015: Sherlock shoots Magnussen.
  • JANUARY 2015: Sherlock, Mycroft, Lady Smallwood, Vivian, and Sir Edwin meet right after Sherlock leaves the tarmac.
  • LATE JANUARY/EARLY FEBRUARY 2015: Rosie is born.
  • MAY-ish 2015: Rosie throwing rattle at Sherlock, sitting up, holding head up, so that’s *minimum* three months old.
  • A lot of vague “time passing” scenes in TST–Mary traveling, John’s montage of mourning. Lots of wiggle room there. At the end of TST, Rosie looks like she’s around 6 months old (?) or so, which would put us in SUMMER 2015 at the end.
  • SUMMER 2015: At beginning of TLD we have no idea how much time has passed since Mary died, so you get to fill in that gap as well.
  • If we go with it not being much later and Rosie is 5 or 6 months old when TST ends, then it’s probably LATE JULY 2015 at the beginning of TLD.
  • LATE JULY 2015 (probably): Eurus-as-Faith goes to Sherlock to hire him. They hang out and eat chips.
  • THREE WEEKS LATER, on a FRIDAY: The bulk of the episode occurs on this one day. John is having his first session with Eurus-as-therapist, Hudders shows up with Sherlock in the trunk, they go to meet Culverton Smith at hospital, John beats Sherlock, Sherlock, while in his hospital bed, gets Smith to confess, John sees the DVD from Mary and saves Sherlock. Busy day. If we carry on with previous assumptions, this is happening in AUGUST 2015.
  • SOME TIME LATER, BUT ALSO APPARENTLY SHERLOCK’s BIRTHDAY: Sherlock and John in 221b, Sherlock sobering up. Irene Adler text. The Hug. The amount of time between this day and the day of Culverton Smith’s confession is up to you.
  • A LITTLE LATER THAT SAME DAY: John and Sherlock in 221b prepping to go downstairs to meet Molly for cake at Speedy’s. How much time passed between The Hug and this scene? Dunno. But they’re wearing the same clothes as previous scene and the light coming in the windows hasn’t changed much.
  • TIME PASSES. Eurus-as-therapist reveals her true identity to John and shoots him with a tranquilizer dart, Sherlock finds Eurus-as-Faith’s note in 221b. Mycroft and Lady Smallwood do whatever they were doing in Mycroft’s office. All of this seems to be happening on the same day. No clue how much time has passed between The Hug and this therapy session.
  • AUGUST 2015 (???): TFP seems to pick up pretty much right after TLD: evening, Mycroft’s house, Sherlock and John prank Mycroft into revealing the truth about Eurus.
  • THE NEXT DAY (probably): Sherlock, John, and Mycroft in 221b during the daytime. Mycroft explains about Eurus. Patience grenade. Boom.
  • TIME PASSES. There is no clear indicator of how much time, though. The next scene is pirate!Sherlock commandeering the boat to infiltrate Sherrinford and the only other time anchor we have is how old Rosie looks at the very end of TFP, which is way open to debate and wiggle room. Therefore, it could be days or weeks between the patience grenade and the Invasion of Sherrinford.
  • ONE DAY in FALL 2015 PROBABLY: All the events at Sherrinford and Musgrave happen on the same very long day. The gap between Sherrinford and Musgrave is a very precise “hours and hours” as stated by Eurus-as-little-girl-on-plane. It’s daytime when they arrive at Sherrinford and when the Garridebs are dropped, and nighttime when Sherlock wakes up on the table in the fake room at Musgrave.
  • SOME DAY AFTER THAT: The Holmes parents and Holmes brothers meet in Mycroft’s office.
  • ANOTHER DAY: Sherlock goes to Sherrinford to play violin with Eurus. Based on Sherlock’s clothes in these scenes, it seems his parents and Mycroft join them later that same day.
  • ANOTHER DAY: John and Sherlock putting 221b back together–everything’s still pretty blackened and burned.
  • ANOTHER DAY: John and Sherlock watch Mary’s “Miss You” DVD.
  • ANOTHER DAY: 221b looking much better. John paints smiley back on wall. Sherlock shoots the wall. How much time would it take to get 221b looking that much better?
  • MANY DAYS PASS: Sherlock and John with clients, etc.  Rosie looks around a year old to me–ymmv, so it could probably be anywhere between NOVEMBER 2015 and FEBRUARY 2016 at the very end of TFP.

See what I mean? Enormous amounts of wiggle room at several points.

I like wiggle room.

Great work, thank you!

Okay, this timeline wrangling is giving me a headache. Officially requesting your help. (Signal boosting definitely counts as helping!)

WHEN WAS THE FALL? So far, I’ve got conflicting sources (June 2011 or 2012?)

WHEN DID SHERLOCK RETURN? It was stated as a two-year absence.

WHEN WAS JOHN AND MARY’s WEDDING? Invitation in TSOT says Saturday, May 18, which would be true in 2013, but not 2014 because May 18 was a Sunday. So if it was indeed a 2-year absence, that means Sherlock jumped off Bart’s in June 2011. But then there’s this bit of info which states Sherlock returned in November 2013, and in TEH, Lord Moran uses a code indicating it’s 2013.

WHEN WAS ROSIE BORN? This post calculated Mary was around 34 or 35 weeks pregnant at Christmas, which makes her due date around last week of January/first week of February. But would it be 2014 or 2015?

Tagging @destinationtoast and @marsdaydream because I know they had to do all this math for their fics :).

Also, anyone have guesses on how old Rosie is at different points in s4? I’ve got estimates based on my own experiences and some minor googling.

In TST, when Rosie throws rattle at Sherlock, she is sitting up in something that looks like a Bumbo and able to hold her head up just fine on her own, so that’s at least 3 months old, imo.

At the end of TLD, John deduces it’s Sherlock’s birthday. If we go with SH’s bday being January 6, then Rosie’s almost a year old??? And what the hell year is it???

But a lot of time passes from then until the end of TFP, and I’m not sure how old Rosie is supposed to be in the final montage there. Haven’t hashed out the TFP timeline yet, but I’m workin’ on it. 🙂

Signal boosts appreciated! I need all the help I can get with this tangled thing.

The timeline is inconsistent af. I’ll try to dig up my notes, but also signal boosting!

Fall was 2011. When Magnussen views his mental file about Sherlock, it says ‘declared deceased 2011-2013. It was John’s blog that initially said that the show had entered 2012 during ASiP. But that’s not on screen. What Cam views is.

Sherlock, by most feasible calculation returned on Nov 2, 2013. So John’s wedding was in 2014. There’s a confusion of dates as, again, blog indicates August wedding while on screen date is May. As usual, we could discard the blog date, but IIRC, there’s a mention of changed date in DVD commentary? Just that I recall one of the Moftiss talking about this.

This makes tarmac scene 2015 (a week from Christmas 2014). As for when Rosie was born, haven’t speculated that yet.

Which in turn makes the end of TLD – when John wishes Sherlock on his birthday – to be 2016. That is, assuming Sherlock’s birthday is in Jan. There’s no on screen evidence of that. It’s also consistent with TFP timeline when we see Moriarty flashback as ‘Five years earlier’. That would be the time Mycroft was watching Moriarty from the end of ASiP to end of THoB. (Possibly also when he took him yo Sherrinford.)

I’m sorry, I can’t link posts as I’m on mobile. But please do go through my #timeline, #age debate tags as I’ve spent a lot of time on timeline before S4.

What a mess! A trip down @cosmoglaut’s #timeline is terrifying.

If TFP is January 2016, that makes the “Christmas present” visit of Moriarty to Sherrinford in Dec 2010 or Jan 2011, around the time of Sherlock got a Christmas present from Irene and we had the Battersea sceen from ASiB. This timeline would put the Great Game in April 2010, and John and Sherlock’s first meeting in ASIP in January 2010.

From what I’ve seen, this is what I guess. Please ammend

  • 2010-01: ASiP
  • 2010-02 or 03: TBB (I’d beat late February, given how cold it is)
  • 2010-04: TGG
  • 2010-04 to 2011-01: ASiB
  • 2011-03ish to 2011-: THoB
  • 2011-05is to 2011-ish: TRF
  • 2013-10ish to 2013-11: TEH
  • 2014-03ish to 2014-08ish: TSoT (depending on what you read)
  • 2014-09ish to 2015-01: HLV
  • 2015-01: TAB (not touching the drug-addled dream dates)
  • 2015-01 to 2015-09ish: TST (given Rosie’s behaviour, I don’t know)
  • 2015-12ish to 2016-01: TLD
  • 2016-01ish: TFP

So, yeah, Battersea scene and BondAir would be at the same time as the Moriarty/Eurus meet up. Poor Mycroft.
