here’s the problem with john and i think he knows it’s a problem: BECAUSE of the way things used to work before reichenbach like before sherlock left he could be like “don’t follow me!!!” and sherlock would follow him anyways or show up at his date or whatever like. he would tell sherlock not to come and sherlock wouldn’t listen. and even though he put up a fuss, john sort of loved it. so when sherlock came back, john said “fuck off” and he expected sherlock to show up at his surgery. he tells sherlock to leave him alone, and sherlock listens and john is like What Is This Fuckery because he never expected sherlock to listen
in all honesty–and this is me speaking from the assumption that there is no 4th ep or series 5 johnlock–i don’t think there was ever any intention on the part of the creators to have john and sherlock be together. i think they intentionally played with that idea because it was fun and interesting for them to engage in victorian-style homoerotic subtext, but they didn’t want the social or political “burden” of actually following through on john and sherlock’s relationship. they thought the subtext was clever, but they never viewed it as something to take seriously, and they perhaps didn’t think queer people were the ones taking interest in the belief that this show would positively represent them. they just wanted to play in the world of sherlock holmes, but they didnt want to have their sherlock be “the gay sherlock.” and yes, all of that is cruel and bullshit, but i think they never took this as seriously as we did.
I don’t think this means too much tbh. She is just playing it safe with the fandom detaching herself from any negativity regarding Johnlock. I read it that way.
I agree but knowing how she has said certain things that lets us know she ships Johnlock, I’d like to think she at least means well.
Right, so just for context, that quote is from the October 2010 issue of Buzz magazine and here is the full quote in its entirety:
Despite this lack of public awareness, being part of the gay community is clearly important to Gatiss:
“The older I get the more I want to give something back. I mean, I keep meaning to do something.” When asked if he’d be interested in making a series about gay issues, his response was enlightening:
“No, I don’t think I’d make a kind of gay programme. It’s much more interesting when it’s not about a single issue. And equally, I find flirting with the homoeroticism in Sherlock much more interesting. Of course this reflects the grand picture of everyone’s strange make-up; there are good gay people and bad gay people. I wouldn’t like to make an issue film around the culture of being gay.”
The thing is, I get what he means, in a way. Because, yes, “flirting with the homoeroticism” in Sherlock is interesting and makes for fantastic telly. Personally, I’d still say his intentions were mostly good, he just monumentally bollixed the execution.
You can pinpoint the exact moment this show went wrong, and it’s when they decided to treat a person who murders for fun and money as a saint and the person who has repeatedly sacrificed themselves for his loved ones as someone flawed and wrong who needs to be fixed.
Yes when Mary shot Sherlock, everything after that just gets worse and worse.
John ignores it, Myroft ignores it, Sherlock murders Magnussen and is exiled, Rosie is born and they play happy families and Mary loves them both, her boys, she knows them better than they know themselves (Yuck I may be sick), Sherlock ignores all cases and is off his tits for weeks, John sends him away and won’t speak to him and beats him bloody even kicking him when he’s down, the media Baron serial killer almost kills him, only John can save him and he does but only at Mary’s behest then we get Eurus, playing games with Moriarty, finally they go back to 221B to play Happy families but without John, who just comes round to solve cases with his baby. It’s a nightmare, our worst nightmare as well as Sherlock’s, it just gets worse and worse, it accelerates downhill.
It’s exactly that, a nightmare
It’s not true.
Sherlock has to wake up to save John Watson, that’s exactly where it went wrong. Sherlock took Mary on as a client but told John, ‘You may need to restart my heart’
